The Pink Jukebox Trophy
The Pink Jukebox Trophy is going virtual in 2021.
To get us all dancing again and using all the gorgeous dance studios we have at our disposal, we would like to invite Same Sex Dance Couples from all over the world to submit video entries for the competition. There are also Solo Categories for those who cannot perform with a partner.
Same Sex Couples:
There are four categories for Same Sex Couples:
• Men’s Ballroom
• Women’s Ballroom
• Men’s Latin
• Women’s Latin
There are three levels in each category:
Each couple will be required to submit films of their performances of two dances in the category and level they choose to enter:
• Ballroom: Introductory – Waltz, Quickstep
• Ballroom: Intermediate – Waltz, Tango
• Ballroom: Advanced – Foxtrot, Quickstep
• Latin: Introductory – Cha Cha Cha, Jive
• Latin: Intermediate – Rumba, Samba
• Latin: Advanced – Rumba, Paso Doblé
There are two categories for Solo competitors:
There are three levels in each category.
A Solo competitor will be required to submit the film of their performance of the dance in the category and level they choose to enter:
• Ballroom: Introductory – Waltz
• Ballroom: Intermediate – Quickstep
• Ballroom: Advanced – Foxtrot
• Latin: Introductory – Cha Cha Cha
• Latin: Intermediate – Rumba
• Latin: Advanced – Samba
Choosing your level
As it is not practical to have a classification round for this competition, we are asking the competitors to choose the level they wish to enter. Introductory level would be suitable for dancers who are at the Starter or D class for a Same Sex Competition; Intermediate for the C to B class dancers; and Advanced is the Championship level for the B to A class competitors.
Gender and Categories
A competitor who identifies as a man can enter the Men’s Ballroom Couples Category with another man; and the Latin Couples Category with the same or a different partner, at the respective levels they choose. He can only enter each category once. (Multiple entries from individuals with different partners are not allowed.) Additionally, he can enter the Solo categories. Therefore the maximum number of categories a competitor can enter is four.
The same applies for a competitor who identifies as a woman, for the Women’s categories.
Non-binary competitors may choose to enter either the Men’s or the Women’s categories, but the chosen dance-category gender must remain consistent throughout the competition.
We recognise that the chosen dance-category gender of non-binary competitors does not necessarily reflect their gender identity, but rather reflects the competition in which they prefer to take part.
Filming your entry
Set pieces of music, with durations around 1.5 mins, will be provided for the couples or solo competitors entering the competition.
Each routine should be choreographed and danced to the full piece of music, in recognisable International Style with no lifts. These are not Showdance competitions and there should be no props or changes of costume. As is normal, ballroom dances should be in Ballroom Hold throughout except during momentary change of role.
As this is a dance competition and we would like to be as fair as possible to all dancers regardless of their editing and filming skills, we have to introduce restrictions on the films. Each routine must be filmed with a fixed camera, with no editing or special effects. The whole couple, or the individual in the case of the Solo categories, including the feet, should be visible during at least 80% of the film.
Submitting the films
The films must be in either the MP4 or MOV format, and uploaded to our Dropbox account, which will be sent after submission of the entry form.
Competitors might be asked to re-film certain entries. The organisers have the right to cancel entry if they are unable to judge their performance.
In submitting your films, you give permission to use excerpts for promotional purposes; and to broadcast them during the prize-giving event.
The entries will be judged by an international panel of adjudicators. The confirmed members of the panel will be updated here.
You can find a list of the entrants so far here.
The Results Party
All competitors will be invited to an online Results Party, where the Top 3 entries of each category will be announced and broadcast. The party will also be a celebratory event with music, dancing, cabaret, and a strong social element to connect dancers from all over the world.
The event will be open for booking for online spectators.
Owing to the restrictions and problems posed by the ongoing pandemic, the Party has been moved to a later date than previously announced. We are hoping to hold it on Sunday 28th March, 2021, subject to confirmation. Thank you for your understanding.
Application Form and Payment
The competition is open for entry now. Please fill in the application on Smart Survey. Each couple will only need to fill in one form.
The price for entry will be £15 for the first category; £10 for the second; and £5 for each subsequent category. These charges have been set to cover judges’ fees; technical costs; prizes; hall hire for the Results Party and other related costs.
Please pay for your entry via the PayPal link, selecting the correct number of categories that you intend to enter. Payment must be made at the time of submitting your application form.
In light of the new restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic, we have extended the deadline for the submission of the films. All films must now be submitted by Sunday, 31st January, 2021.
